MOBO Award winner to direct new youth choir
A new youth choir is launching in Gravesham led by MOBO Award Winner and Choir Director Volney Morgan.
The Gifted Young Generation choir will begin practicing on Monday 9 September and is looking for youngsters aged between 11 and 19 years to join.
Unlike traditional choirs they will be singing everything from Adele to Ariana Grande – led by a Gospel Choir Director. Choir rehearsals will take place weekly between 4pm and 6:30pm at The Grand in Gravesend town centre.
The choir will be performing at the annual Gifted Young Generation showcase event at The Woodville Theatre in November, with other performances in the pipeline.
Organised by Gifted Young Generation youth team, the project has been awarded funding by Arts Council England to help kick-start the young singers.
Jackie Coupar, Youth Work Manager said, “A choir has been a long-time aim for us, we work with hundreds of young people from all the secondary schools in Gravesham and see first-hand the joy and confidence building skills that singing can bring.
“It might sound silly to some people, but it really changes lives. Mental health is at the heart of everything we do here and it’s been proven that singing, especially as a group has a positive impact. And our choir will be something that’s fun too, with modern songs and real passion – think Sister Act but without the nuns!’
Research by Canterbury Christchurch University in described the effect of singing together as having the following positive effect on people’s mental health as it; evokes positive feelings, increases expectation and hope, raises self-esteem, teaches new abilities and skills, provides social support and networking and provides structure and organisation to a person’s life.
The choir is looking for 50 young people to join in and attend weekly rehearsals after school.
No experience in singing is needed – the choir is fully inclusive and wants to attract both boys and girls to join in.
